How to Change Motorcycle Oil At Home

Just like using riding safety gear on your rides, maintaining a two-wheeler Is one of the essential responsibilities of owning any two-wheeler be it a motorcycle or a scooter. You can save yourself a lot of money by changing the engine oil at home. Here are some very simple steps following which you can do it yourself without the help of an expert.

Understanding the type of engine oil

Engine oils are available either in synthetic or mineral variants.  mineral engine oil is cheaper compared to synthetic engine oil and they are recommended especially if your two-wheeler is brand new. During the initial few hundred kilometers, when the engine has not been completely broken-in yet, it is recommended that you use mineral oil. Mineral oil is also perfect for small capacity engines. Whereas, synthetic engine oil is recommended for high capacity motorcycles. You can also use it in your small capacity motorcycle after you have used it for about 1000 kilometres. The benefit of using synthetic oil is that it lasts longer compared to mineral oil which will have to replace more frequently.

Viscosity of engine oil

Engine oils are both mineral and synthetic, and are available in different viscosity factors. In order to get the best performance out of a motorcycle it is important to find out what type of viscosity your specific two-wheeler engine requires. You can find this out idle by talking to someone else dealership or doing your own research on the internet for your own two-wheeler. Using a higher viscosity oil in your two-wheeler can lead to start-up problems, especially in the winter when the oil cools down much below the recommended temperature.

Things you will need to change engine oil

  • The right viscosity engine oil for your two-wheeler
  •  A few old rags
  •  An oil pan to catch the old oil

Steps to change the engine oil

  1. The first step in the process of changing the two-wheeler engine oil is to start up your motorcycle and go for a short ride. you need not travel long distances, why it is important to warm up the engine. you can also leave your engine on for a few minutes and rev it a little to bring it up to temperature.
  2. Now put your motorcycle on the center stand and using the provided toolkit, open the drain plug under the two-wheeler to release the old engine oil. Before doing this make sure that you place an old oil Pan to catch the dirty oil.
  3. The third step is optional, but it is highly recommended. Take about 200ml of the new oil and pour it into the engine. Remember to close the nut first, otherwise the oil will flow out! Add about 200 ml of engine flush oil and start the motorcycle. Engine flush oil is a specialty product that you can buy at any bike accessories shop near you. Once the mixture is in, allow the engine to idle for about 2 to 5 minutes. Now turn off of the motorcycle and open the drain plug to let the dirty oil come out again.
  4. Once this is done, replace the old oil filter with the new oil filter and then close the drain plug. Now pour the required amount of new engine oil, making sure to do this slowly to avoid any spillage. Once the entire amount of oil has been poured in, start the motorcycle once again and let it ideal for 5 to 10 minutes.
